My child is desperately afraid of water. What should I do?

  • Question: My three year old daughter is desperately afraid of the water. She will only sit by the side of the pool and put her feet in. I try to hold her and take her out, but she refuses. I don't want this to become a lifetime fear. What should I do?
  • Answer: The best way to rid your daughter of this fear is to be around water as much as possible. Buy some fun water toys such as sailboats or an intertube she can ride in. Show her how much fun you and others are having in the pool. It is important to stay patient and encouraging. Praise any sort of progress she makes, no matter how small. Just give her time and her fear will slowly subside.
