BEWARE OF SCAMMERS
For our roommate seekers, it is important to meet the person offering a room or wanting to move in. This initial meeting needs to be in a public place. Try coffee, lunch or dinner. Bring a friend or family member with you and always ask to see identification. Make sure you see the room/space in person (not just pictures) before you send any money for rent or a deposit. Make sure you know what you are getting. A great way to help protect yourself is to create a contract between you and your new roommate and get it notarized (separate from one you may sign with the landlord or apartment leasing office). This will help resolve simple issues and also keep you legally protected. It is common for scammers to send you a fake check or money order, usually for a large amount, and ask for the money back through some third party transfer service (i.e. Western Union). The rule of thumb is to wait 3 weeks to make sure the check will clear. Do not send any money back until after the third week.
